Yes! it’s time to separate the strategic from the operational in HR (I would even argue this is already long overdue). As an HR professional who has only ever worked on the strategic side—well-being, EX, culture, and now future of work—I have seen too often HR leaders having to juggle those balls. Most can’t. The balls that typically fall are on the experiential side because they tend to be more nuanced/iterative/“human”. Focus on the transactional is safer/predictable/measurable etc., don’t get me wrong, everyone loves and appreciates a good payroll process!

I’d add to your comments that not only do we need to split the HR function once and for all, we need a different crop of leader to close the gap that most organizations have in this area, and scale fast!

Maybe you should crowdsource what the new focus areas should be called. One could argue that “Human Resources” should be put to rest altogether :) Look forward to more of your musings on this!
